Countdown

One week till departure!!  We've started preparing our list of things that need to be done before we hop on the plane next Friday afternoon (hold mail, buy new sheets for the apartment, etc..)..  Had a great night out with Friends in downtown Charlotte's "best and only authentic german beer garden"..  Guessing that I'll have quite a few more options in the big apple.. That could become dangerous quickly!!  :)

After a long and much needed nap at the hotel I staked out to explore London. A picture perfect warm summer evening with the sun low on the horizon casting its long shadows over the pedestrians walking away from Leicester Square I hopped into the tube for a quick dinner at the Brick Lane Beigel Bake, followed by fresh gulab jamun from a Pakistani Sweets Shop further down into the "ethnic" side of Brick Lane. Feeling the effects of the previous nights travel, I returned early back to the hotel where I quickly fell into a deep sleep.

Charlotte --> London

As always I was able to grab only a few winks since leaving Chicago six hours ago, but was excited by the prospect of my trip ahead. 13 days, 5 countries, 25,683 miles and a chance to reconnect with a journey I've made only twice before.

Three hours after touching down at Heathrow's Terminal Three on a sunny June morning, a light lunch and a spin through Marks and Spencer to kill time, I am sitting in the lounge of the Hilton Canary Wharf, waiting for my room to be ready and relishing the thought of a short nap and a long shower in no particular order.

06/07/2009 - Helen, Georgia

Never did I think my first Blog Entry would be one which described my visit to North Georgia (think rolling hills and antique stores as far as the eye could see), but here I was on a sunny Sunday morning looking out over self proclaimed "Little Bavaria". Our weekend away was a special one, on a whim we decided that as I would be out of the country on June 21st we would celebrate Fathers Day a few weeks early. After seeing the Atlanta Braves loose 3-0 to the Milwaukee Brewers at Turner Field the night before, we awoke to the sound of the little ones attempts to raise her parents from their deep sleep from the other side of the hotel room. "good morning dada.. I ready to go" she echoed, becoming more and more insistent that it was indeed time for us to get out of bed and get moving.

Breakfast and several laps around the hotel pool later we were on our way through suburban Atlanta, hurtling towards the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains which seemed to buckle out of the horizon, rising to meet the clouds which had begun to envelop their gently sloped peaks.

Upon arrival in Helen, one was immediately struck by the fact that you definately wouldn't be mistaking your surroundings for Bavaria any time soon, but the place definately had a rustic charm to it which was enhanced by the numerous German Inn's and restaurants that were strewn about the landscape. One in particular, the Edelweiss German Inn served as the setting for a very nice lunch, rounded off by fresh German Style Cheesecake at the charming "Hofers German Bakery" in downtown Helen, which also doubles as a beer garden when the weather is nice.

Before leaving town, we did also manage to stop off at "Windmill Dutch Imports" to replenish our supply of Knoflook Sauce which had been dwindling ever since our departure from the Netherlands back in November, a definate plus.

With brochures to the longest running Octoberfest in the US in our hands, we began our leisurly journey back to the Carolinas, filled with the satisfaction of a perfect family weekend adventure.
